“ineage in loops is a craft × code workshop led by Helen Lin and Yu Lee that traces language, technology, and cultural memory through textile and computation. Participants map name characters into filet crochet patterns using web-based tools, then hand-stitch these patterns into textile pieces.
The workshop explores connections between textile structures and computational logic, drawing from the garment industry history of New York. By slowing down automated processes of weaving through manual crochet, participants are invited to archive their name memories into a tactile, personal artifact that is repeated, weighted, and held.
No prior experience in code or crochet is required. Participants will learn basic crochet stitches and how to create a filet crochet design. The workshop will begin with a lecture, followed by creating a 2x2 filet crochet square, and lastly adding your family name square, which you can take home to continue.”
