“t’s now crayfish season!
Last August, while in Greece, I met my friend Valia at a house party in Exarcheia. She had just returned from Sweden where she attended her first kräftskiva. In August the Swedes have a summertime celebration of eating crayfish and drinking aquavit. While Valia told us about the party and showed us pictures of these small red delights my mouth watered. I was starving. With crayfish on my mind I hit the city streets and met a group of close friends at a delicious seafood restaurant that I will keep to myself. I ordered a plate of shrimp in hopes of satiating my new obsession.
It didn’t do the trick. All winter long I took guesses at what a kräftskiva would be like. In my head they played out nicely with fun for all. I’ve now wondered long enough. Eating these sweet small bites of crayfish followed up with life loosening aquavit can’t wait for August. As much as I’d love to go to Sweden, lack of time, finances, and impatience have led us to do a kräftskiva here in May. It will be a celebration of spring in New York City.
